Happy Fourth of July!

July is going to be a busy month for the Library. The summer reading program is wrapping up. The last day to turn in your reading time is Thursday, July 10. The Reading Roundup program will be Saturday, July 12 at the Daingerfield City Park. Be sure to join us for games, prizes, and refreshments.

In addition, July is Homemade Ice Cream Month and Tell a Joke Month. Unfortunately, the Library does not have a book dedicated to ice cream recipes. We do have recipe books on grilling and desserts. For a laugh, be sure to check out our joke books.

Since we don't have an ice cream cookbook, here's my favorite recipe:

My Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream

3 eggs, well blended

2 cups sugar

3 - 4 cups milk

Blend the above ingredients in a saucepan. Heat over low heat, stirring just about constantly until the mixture is hot through and through - enough to cook the eggs. (If you do not stir this often enough, the egg will settle and cook in clumps.) Take off the stove and let cool a bit. If you have time, cool in refrigerator.

When you are ready to make your ice cream, pour the mixture in your freezer container. Stir in:

1 can sweetened condensed milk

1 large can evaporated milk

1 tablespoon vanilla

milk - enough to fill to the fill line

Stir everything with a long-handled spoon. Freeze according to the directions with the freezer. Makes 1 gallon. This is my basic recipe. You can add any fruit that you want (2-4 cups), just be sure to crush it and add to the mix before it completely freezes, or it will all settle to the bottom.
